Time does fly! Mostly Millinery is busy preparing some transitional hats (late winter through early warm weather) for offer in the next month or so.

The categories of hats being prepared are fedoras (for men and women), cloches (usually thought of as the style of the 1920s), floppy hats (big soft brims), as well as classic berets and fabulous fascinators!

MM will participate in the juried Indiana State Museum Art Fair in downtown Indianapolis on Friday February 17 through Sunday February 19. This will be MM's first appearance at this most excellently regarded show!

Mostly Millinery has returned! While preparing for an Artisan Market earlier this year, she got too busy to remember to blog on a regular basis and then after the market, she just forgot to return to blogging!

The attention paid to hats as a result of the Royal Wedding has been amazing. And all milliners are thankful for that!

Mostly offers fascinators as beginner hats for those who are not ready for, or feel uncomfortable with wearing a real hat.

It's Happy Dance time! Inspired just received notice that she's been accepted to participate in the Indiana Artisan Art Fair in April! It's a 3 day event to be held at the State Fairgrounds. She's beyond excited! Only 75 artists from all over Indiana were accepted and invited!

FINALLY got around to blocking two felts today. One a red felt for a girly-girl winter hat for a fashionable young lady; the other a print velour in cream and muted burgundy made on an altered hat block. Good to be back at creating again!

Mostly has donated one of her creations to WFYI for its September fund raiser auction. The auction will be on line, so watch for it at WFYI.org.

The hat is a velour cloche, hand blocked, with an adjustable drawstring head size band which will fit an average 22.5 head size. The purple cloche is trimmed in gold fabric, green and gold ribbon, red cherries, and green velour leaves.

Inspired just got back from two amazing weeks doing nothing but learning more about millinery craft at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina! Wayne Wichner from California was the instructor and he was the absolute best ever! Inspired has taken many classes from many instructors, but learned more from Wayne than anyone in the past.

Just finished dying two straw hat bodies. One, supposed to be a light brown minkish color, turned out to be a dark grape! The other, supposed to be sage green, came out a dark green! Still fun to do even with the randomness of the whole process!

In the last two days, Inspired has seen two commercials with hats being worn by the women in them. Yesterday it was a Toyota commercial with two women wearing styles similar to those of the 1940s. Today it was a Subway restaurant commercial with a woman wearing a red cloche trimmed in black.

This is certainly encouraging to those of us who love hats!

Mostly Millinery (aka Inspired) recently received notice that a hat she had made had won runner-up in the pattern division of a competition using felt fabric. The competition was sponsored by a millinery supply store (www.judithm.com) along with a manufacturer of felt fabric.

Her hat entry was inspired by an illustration on a sewing pattern envelope from the 1940s. The hat was sewn entirely by hand using felt fabric, was decorated with top stitching and beads, and lined in silk.

Inspired has spent the better part of the last 4 weeks working on two hats made of flat felt for a contest co-sponsored by Judith M millinery supplier. The deadline for entry was today. The first hat was done about 2 weeks ago. The second hat was finished just under the entry deadline! What a nail-biting couple of weeks! It's going to be exciting to see what milliners have come up with for the contest. Hope that Judith posts lots of entry photos!

Now...on to making hats for Spring. Really looking forward to making some of the ideas I have for hats for young ladies!

Reactions to custom hats never fails to amaze: Inspired wanted to look spiffy for a meeting this morning and wore a beret made a while back. On the way to the meeting, made a stop at the bank and the gals loved the hat. Then on the way back from the meeting, Inspired grabbed a coffee at a drive-through and the youngish (probably late college) guy at the window said "awesome hat"! That's not the first time a college age male has commented favorably on my hats. That's intriguing since a female in the same age range as the guys wouldn't be caught dead wearing a nice hat. Maybe a ball cap, or if the weather insists on headwear, a ski type of cap.

Hand dyed two straw hoods last night - turned out well. My fingers are the same lovely shade of Dharma fiber reactive Royal Blue dye ! The hoods will be blocked and made into girly girl hats for girly girls! It's so much run to watch little girls come up to my booth and fall in love with hats! Tonight it's Dharma Black Cherry.

Inspired (Mostly Millinery) is busy finishing hats for the Eiteljorg Winter Market on Dec. 5. This time Inspired is making some fabric hats and sewing them. One pattern developed a year or so ago is more fun to make than another pattern. Don't know why, though.

There will also be the traditionally hand blocked and embellished hats available at the Market. All hats are one of a kind and created by hand. No glue used!!!!

Oh my, it's been such a long time since I've been here! I've had a lengthy bout with facial dermatitis. Bit of information: hats can, to some degree, hide or disguise problems with the facial skin!

I went to "the" Walmart today to do a bit of shopping. Entering the store I saw a woman of indeterminate age pushing a cart and chatting with a man who appeared to be her son. She had on an average ready to wear hat and had draped it with a long scarf which she'd tied into a bow. She looked amazing. I suppose that she stood out because women just don't wear hats around here. I wanted to say something to her, but didn't. While I was in the store, I saw her again several times. Finally when I came to the end of my shopping, I once again saw her and this time I did tell her how wonderful she looked. She was a dear! She was so pleased to be noticed and complimented.

I also saw a younger middle aged woman wearing a ball cap. Not that a ball cap is especially notable, but she had beautiful hair pulled through the opening in the back and wore a nice casual outfit which coordinated with her cap color.

One of Inspired's hats went to the Hanover College graduation ceremony on Saturday. It was not an outrageous hat, but it garnered second glances. It's always interesting to find that the compliments come from children or young adults and not the generations who grew up wearing hats to everything and everywhere.

Making people happy by making and selling hats to them was one of the highlights of the Women's Market at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis last weekend. The other highlight was selling to little girls - they were so excited with the hats designed for them and had no pre-conceived notions about whether they'd look good in a hat or how they placed the hat on their head. Inspired Millinery is happy that Spring is not too far away! Hats are ready for the Women's Market at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis at the end of this month! The photo shows a hat made of sinamay straw that I've hand dyed and hand blocked. It is decorated with more sinamay and faux pearls. The hat fits an "average" head size - about 22.5 inches. There is an adjustable head size band in the crown for a perfect fit.

Today Inspired Millinery received via UPS a couple of hat bodies printed with skulls to make a favorite relative a skull fedora! Why two? Because I make the crown and brim separately since I can't make my fedora crown block fit inside the brim block (different sizes).

Spring line now has to be put aside for a while!

Inspired Millinery will be dying some sinamay straw today to make embellishments for a sinamay hat. The straw for the hat was dyed a few months ago, then when I blocked the hat I found that there would not be enough straw left over to make the embellishments I had in mind.

Inspired Millinery has to start working toward a spring/summer line to show at the Eiteljorg Museum's Women's Art Market in March. Working with lightweight materials and pretty summery colors will help pass these gray winter days!

The aforementioned hats were a hit. Sis didn't realize, at first, that skulls were printed all over her hat. She thought it was just a "nice print". However, once the skulls were recognized, she declared that she'd never take off her hat!

Beloved nephew also liked his fedora. And it looks good on him.

Wow! Christmas is day after tomorrow! But I, Inspired Millinery, am on top of the gift-giving part of the holiday!

My sis loves skulls and I found a fantastic wool felt hat body from Leko printed with skulls! Absolutely perfect! I blocked it on my cloche block and added a grosgrain sham bow for a bit of executive lady style! She probably won't wear it, but I certainly had lots of fun making it and can't wait to see her reaction when she opens it!

For beloved nephew, a sophisticated lad soon to graduate college, I made a fedora. Now there was a challenge! The third time was most definitely a charm with this hat. The first two attempts had to be consigned to the scrap drawer (to be used in some way at a later date), but I learned from my mistakes. The final attempt was a success, though several times through the process I thought that I might have another candidate for the scrap drawer! Yesterday, I put the outside grosgrain ribbon around the completed hat and added a bit of wild turkey (not the beverage) feather to the band. Cool! It looks better than any I've seen in the stores!

To the best of my knowledge, there are only two millinery supply companies left in the United States. If I'm correct, both of them seem to be owned by women. I know for certain that JudithM, in northern Indiana, is owned by a woman - Judith. Her service, communication and products are great. I've also ordered from Leko on the west coast and have been satisfied with the products I purchased.

It doesn't appear that I will get to work on my Spring line today, but I'm going to work on getting my bio and resume ready to send out with press releases.

I remember my grandmother always wearing a hat. She had longish, lovely white hair and wore it in a bun or twist when I was younger. She'd come to our house, sit down at the dining table to visit, and reach up to remove the hat pin anchoring the smallish hat to her head. The pin went into the hat and through the bun. Since the pin didn't have a point protector, I wonder if she ever accidentally poked herself! Removing the hat pin and the hat and then reversing the process before she left was such a feminine gesture.

I (Inspired Millinery) was checking out of an appointment yesterday when the receptionist complimented me on my hat. I told her that it wasn't one that I'd made, but one which my nephew had given me a few years ago. Another person in the office told the receptionist that I made hats. Now the receptionist wants to view my portfolio at my next visit because her family is involved in the arts! And another person in the office told me that she has contacts in my area!
